What are Special Topics Workshops

Special Topics Workshops are a part of our Targeted & Specialized TA opportunities. Each two- or three-day STW addresses specific, focused content relevant to educating students who are deaf-blind. Usually held on a Thursday evening through Saturday time frame, each STW event offers a depth of knowledge, taking participants beyond an awareness level to the implementation level of learning, by focusing on a particular skill, strategy, or topic. Participants can often earn CEUs as a result of participation.

What are examples of  Special Topics Workshops

In recent years, STW events have addressed “special topic” issues such as communication, common core adaption, and calendar systems for students with deaf-blindness. They have also addressed “specific conditions” such as CHARGE Syndrome, cortical visual impairment, or deaf-blindness. Each STW is facilitated by one or more experts on the targeted training topic. Click the links below to read more about select STW topics and events (now featured on our Resources pages):

Who participates in Special Topics Workshops

Any member of a team working with a child with deaf-blindness is encouraged to attend. The workshops are designed for multidisciplinary team members, including regular and special educators, family members, paraeducators, interveners, related service providers, administrators, teachers of the visually impaired, and teachers of the deaf/hard-of-hearing who work directly or indirectly with students with dual sensory impairments and/or severe disabilities.

What is the cost of Special Topics Workshops

The fee varies for each STW event. Families of children birth through 21 with deaf-blindess in Maryland or DC may always attend at no cost. Providers pay approximately $100-$150 for the two days of targeted and specialized training. In addition, all participants of a Special Topics Workshop event (family members and providers) are eligible for free follow-up support and TA as requested or needed. Participants can often earn CEUs as a result of participation.
