The annual Summer Institute hosted by Connections Beyond Sight and Sound is part of our Technical Assistance activities. The 2017 topic is “Cortical Visual Impairment: A Focus on Phase III Learners” — presented by Dr. Christine Romain-Lantzy.

 

Why:

  • This workshop is designed to provide assessment and educational information regarding Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), specifically children who score in Phase III on The CVI Range.
  • Participants will gain knowledge and skill to better identify, assess, and educate children with CVI.
  • Topics will include general assessment and intervention strategies, environmental modifications, orientation and mobility, pre-literacy and literacy learning strategies for children in Phase III. Discussion, videotapes, and hands-on activities will be utilized to enrich the content.

 

Please NOTE: 

  • The course content is specifically relevant for individuals who live or work with children who have CVI (with or without other disabilities).
  • This Summer Institute is designed to meet the needs of regular and special educators, family members, related service providers, administrators, teachers of the visually impaired, and teachers of the deaf/hard-of-hearing who work directly or indirectly with students with dual sensory impairments and/or cortical visual impairment, Phase III.

  • This Summer Institute is designed for participants who have experience and prior knowledge of CVI.
  • This is not an introductory course!
  • Family members and providers with experience and prior knowledge of CVI may register to attend.

Parking:

  • You will receive a parking code each day to use on the following day.
  • The parking code for Monday June 19 has been emailed to all registrants.
    This is the parking code for Monday only!
  • You will get the parking code for Tuesday on Monday afternoon.

  • You must type in the parking code If you park your car on the UM campus.
  • If you do not use the parking code and do not pay for parking ($15 per day) then you are at risk for a $75 parking ticket!

Materials & Agenda:

  • Agenda –> 
    • Agenda is flexible and will be adjusted through the week to match the needs of the participants and the flow of the workshops each day.
    • General content to be covered will include –>
      — Special considerations for assessment during CVI Phase III
      — Identifying goals and concerns for individuals children
      — Working as a team — families and providers — for assessment and goals
      — Understanding assessment results
      — Using the CVI Range scores to describe vision functions levels, to consider and plan for beneficial accommodations, to define strength and needs, etc…
      — Understanding the results of Rating 1 and Rating 2 becomes useful information for IEPs
      — Understanding a CVI Schedule
      — Understanding salient features and comparative thought
      — Exploring vision and AAC, including an overview of Matt Tietjen’s work in complexity and image inventory
      — Considering vision language learning, literacy principles, social skills development, Orientation and Mobility (O&M), and other relevant issues
    • Workshops will include presentation, discussion, group activities, and exercises to support participants in using the information being shared each day.
    • There will be a quiz to support participants in understanding their own strengths and needs with respect to using the CVI Range and working with children in Phase III

    • If you have a copy of Dr. Roman-Lantzy’s book, “CVI, An Approach to Assessment and Intervention,” please bring it with you for this week.
    • Professionals – Please bring any materials you use for phase III assessment and any books that have assisted you in any way regarding CVI Phase III.

  • Internet Access –> 
    • There will be internet access during the daily workshops.
    • You will be given access codes on arrival.

  • CPD Units –> 
    • This five day course has been APPROVED for TWO CPD units by MSDE.
      What you will need to submitter CPD/CEUs…
    • If you are a certified teacher in Maryland, you will need to submit the following:
      –> a copy of your registration for this event,
      –> the CPD form with the course number, and
      –> a certificate of attendance.
    • If you are not a certified teacher in Maryland, you will need to submit the following:
      –> a copy of your registration,
      –> the AGENDA,

    • LUNCH IS ON YOUR OWN
      • The Stamp Student Union has a variety of food to offer on the main level and a few more choices in the basement.
      • You are welcome to bring your own lunch.
      • We are a GREEN campus, meaning there will be no plastic water bottles for participants but you are welcome to bring your own water bottle to refill as often as you may need to.
      • Please recycle and refill your water bottle as needed. Water bottle refills are free.
