    Information will be provided for participants to be able to submit for CEU / CPD in their local school system. Meaning, items needed for CPD approval such as speaker resume, bio, participant registration, etc, will be made available so that participants who want to pursue CEUs or CPDs have the need materials.
  • Lunch — Lunch will be provided.
    Feel free to bring your own food & beverage if desired.
  • Parking — FREE

2016 CBSS Summer InstituteWhat:

The Fall 2016 Special Topics Workshop, hosted by Connections Beyond Sight and Sound (the Maryland and DC Deaf-blind Project)STWs address specific, focused content relevant to educating students who are deaf-blind, offering a depth of knowledge and taking participants beyond an awareness level to the implementation level of learning, by focusing on a particular skills, strategy, condition, or topic.

This STW offers different content
than the 2016 Summer Institute.

Who (Participants):

FRIDAY is open to ALL PARTICIPANTS:
This workshop is for parents, family members, educators, teachers of the visually impaired, teachers of the D/HH, speech language pathologists, OTs, and other educators.

SATURDAY is open to “student-centered teams” only.
THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
A team is at least three professionals and one family member — all interested in collaborating with our experts around literacy for a specific student.

Why:

  • Recent research confirms that learners with visual impairments or deaf-blindness and multiple disabilities, no matter their age, benefit when literacy concepts are built from frequent, meaningful experiences.
  • This workshop will provide opportunities for participants to both learn and discuss reasons and strategies to connect communication, object schedules, and literacy related experiences to daily routines and regular school activities.
  • Specific attention will be given to students with sensory loss combined with physical challenges and cognitive delays.
  •  Ideas for teachers to use with learners of all ages will be shared with picture and video examples.

As a result of this training activity, participants will be able to:

  • List three reasons to connect literacy related experiences into the daily routines,
  • Identify two strategies for adding literacy skills to established routines, and
  • Identify two strategies to select objects to represent .

When:

Friday, November 4  —  8:30 am to 4 pm
Saturday November 5 — by appointment

    Saturday will consist of student-centered collaboration,
    learning, and planning with team members.

    Saturday Team REQUIREMENTS –>
  • Participants must sign up and have at least three professional and one family member
  • Teams must include a classroom teacher and a family member
  • Educator and family member must work with the same child
  • Additional suggested team members –> 
    Teacher, Teacher of the visually impaired, Teacher of the D/HH,
    Speech language Pathologist, OT, Other educators & family members.
